Mandarin oranges Prevent Obesity

Research shows eating mandarin oranges on a regular basis can reduce the risk of diabetes and atherosclerosis that can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

At least that is the result of research Murray Huff, vascular biologists from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and his student, Erin Mulvihill. This research focus in the fight against heart disease and stroke as the number one killer in the world.

Huff and Erin studied two groups of mice. Both were fed high fat and simple sugars. To distinguish them, the researchers added nobiletin, substances in orange, the second group.

In group one, which accompanied accretion occurs fattening cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin content, and high sugar in blood, liver and fattening. These metabolic abnormalities lead to the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Meanwhile, what happens in the second group of mice was no increase in cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin content, and sugar. Nobiletin can even prevent the formation of fat in the liver by stimulating genes that burn excess fat and fat production.

"The addition of nobiletin basically protects from obesity," said Huff, Director of the Vascular Biology Research Group at Robarts. Huff further research and found a compound in grapes called naringenin which has the same function with nobiletin. "But, nobiletin ten times more effective compared to naringenin," Huff said.
